Guides to check geometry and naming

Structural guides on gingham, plaid and twill, plus clear definitions of the terms used across check pattern work.

Naming and scope

One term, one page

Each guide targets a single search intent. Synonyms are grouped on one canonical page rather than split across thin duplicates.

Synonyms

Glen Check and Glen Plaid

Both names describe the same glen check layout. They are covered together on one canonical guide.

Synonyms

Window Check and Windowpane

Window check and windowpane refer to the same large-scale overcheck. One canonical page explains the structure.

Discipline

No duplicate presets

Each preset lives at one URL with original explanation, so the guides stay substantial rather than repetitive.

Editorial boundaries

Textile geometry, nothing else

This library covers woven and printed check patterns: repeat units, stripe widths, spacing and color references. It does not cover finite element or computational mesh generation, so terms from those fields are excluded from every guide.

Where a guide discusses how a check is built, it describes the cloth, the sett and the repeat. The aim is to help designers read and reproduce a pattern accurately.

Historical reference

Named tartans are references

Names such as Shepherd's Check, Gun Club or Madras describe widely recognized looks. The generators reproduce their layout as a design starting point.

No generated pattern is an authenticated clan or regimental sett. Treat each named check as a reference for proportion and color, and confirm any heritage claim against primary sources.
