What is houndstooth?

Houndstooth, also called dogtooth, is a broken check with pointed, tooth-like edges. Its traditional colour-and-weave construction uses four dark and four light warp yarns, the same sequence in the weft, and a 2/2 twill. The diagonal interlacing transforms the simple yarn colour order into a more complex motif than an ordinary checkerboard.

Classic, mini and oversized houndstooth patterns

Classic black and white houndstooth is a familiar tailoring motif for coats, blazers, suiting and skirts. Mini puppytooth creates a finer effect on shirts and accessories, while oversized houndstooth makes a stronger visual statement on jackets, home textiles and prints. Changing scale preserves the underlying 8 × 8 colour-and-weave repeat.

How to make your own houndstooth pattern

  1. Choose classic, mini, oversized or reverse-diagonal houndstooth.
  2. Select a palette or enter custom HEX values for warp and weft colours.
  3. Set the classic repeat width and full image dimensions in centimetres.
  4. Click Generate to inspect the seamless tile and tiled preview.
  5. Download the single PNG tile, vector SVG or larger full-size PNG.

Houndstooth vs plaid, gingham and herringbone

Houndstooth is a pointed broken check formed by yarn colours and twill interlacing. Plaid usually features crossing stripes of different widths. Gingham is generally made with regular bands that form comparatively simple checks. Herringbone is a chevron-like arrangement produced through a reversal of diagonal twill direction. These are separate textile structures or visual categories.

Repeat sizes, PNG and SVG downloads

One houndstooth tile contains an 8 × 8 yarn-colour-and-weave repeat. If its width is 1.6 cm, a 300 PPI PNG is approximately 189 × 189 pixels. The same tile can repeat over a larger printed area. Vector SVG preserves crisp geometric details at different sizes. For physical manufacturing, always check print resolution, colour profiles, fabric shrinkage and pattern matching.
