What Is a Windowpane Check Pattern?
A windowpane pattern features widely spaced vertical and horizontal pinstripes crossing at right angles. The resulting open squares or rectangles resemble panes in a window. A classic windowpane check uses a solid-colour background rather than the alternating filled blocks of a checkerboard.
Construction and Styles
Classic windowpane has one narrow line at each grid boundary. Double-line windowpane pairs two closely spaced lines, while shadow-line windowpane places a second, offset colour next to the main line. All three retain the defining open-grid structure. Equal pane width and height creates square checks; unequal spacing produces rectangular windowpanes.
How to Create Your Windowpane Pattern
Choose a pattern style and colour preset, then set the repeat width and height in centimetres. Select how many panes appear across and down the repeat, and adjust the line thickness in millimetres. Click Generate to see the tiled design. After the first generation, changing settings updates the preview.
Choosing Colours, Scale and Repeat Dimensions
Black and white windowpane checks create striking contrast; navy, grey and tonal combinations offer a quieter tailoring look. A white windowpane shirt or blue windowpane shirt typically uses finer, lighter grids than a bold blazer check. For example, two panes across a 10 cm repeat give 5 cm between vertical lines. The repeat tile is the smallest exported design unit, not the size of the whole garment.
Downloads and Practical Uses
Save a 300 PPI PNG for raster work, an SVG for scalable vector editing, or a full tiled image for layout mockups. A windowpane check shirt, men’s windowpane trousers or tailored jacket can use the same grid structure at different scales. Digital artwork is not a loom draft; verify the physical repeat, line registration and printed colours with your manufacturer.

Windowpane Checks: Open Grids, Clear Lines and Seamless Repeats
A windowpane check is built from slender horizontal and vertical lines separated by generous areas of the background fabric. The crossings outline squares or rectangles, rather than filling each space with colour. That quiet structure is why windowpane patterns work so well on tailored jackets, shirts and trousers.
The windowpane pattern generator above lets you choose a classic, double-line or shadow-line grid, select colours, set the repeat in centimetres and adjust the number of panes. Use the preview to judge how busy the check feels before exporting a seamless PNG, SVG or larger tiled image.
This guide explains the textile structure behind those settings. The illustrations are original vector examples; they are not photographs or weaving drafts.
What Is a Windowpane Check Pattern?
Windowpane check consists of narrow, regularly spaced lines crossing at right angles on an open ground. Its name comes from the resemblance to a multi-paned window. The grid can be light on dark, dark on light or deliberately tonal. Larger spacing makes each pane more prominent; thinner lines make the pattern less assertive from a distance.
In woven windowpane fabric, selected warp yarns create lengthwise lines and selected weft yarns create crosswise lines. The underlying fabric may use plain weave, twill or another structure. A windowpane grid is therefore a surface design arrangement, not a promise that the entire fabric has a particular weave. It may also be printed, knitted or digitally illustrated.
At a crossing, two coloured yarn directions can make the line appear slightly denser. However, windowpane does not depend on the broad three-tone checks characteristic of gingham. Its distinguishing feature is the predominance of open background between thin crossing lines.
Windowpane Pattern Styles and Original Examples
The most useful variations retain the same open-grid construction. Line treatments change the character of the pattern without replacing it with a filled checkerboard or broad-band plaid.
Example proportions are illustrative and not fixed industry standards. “Mini”, “large”, “blue” and “tonal” describe scale or colourway rather than fundamentally different windowpane constructions.
How to Design a Windowpane Repeat
- Choose the line treatment. Start with a classic single line, then compare double-line and shadow-line styles if you need a little more detail.
- Choose the ground colour. Navy, charcoal, cream and white all behave differently. The same thin line will stand out more sharply against a high-contrast ground.
- Set the main line colour. Use a colour that remains visible at the final garment scale. For a shadow-line design, select the secondary line separately.
- Choose repeat width and height in centimetres. These describe the size of the exported tile, not the size of a whole shirt or trouser panel.
- Set panes across and down. The repeat dimensions divided by the respective pane counts determine the spacing between vertical and horizontal lines.
- Adjust line thickness in millimetres. Small differences matter. Excessively thick lines overpower a narrow grid.
- Select Generate. Check the tiled preview for balance and inspect the uninterrupted lines across repeat boundaries.
- Export the appropriate file. Choose PNG for bitmap workflows, SVG for scalable artwork, or the full tiled image for a larger layout view.
For example, a 10 cm wide repeat with two panes across places the vertical grid lines 5 cm apart. If the height is 12 cm with two panes down, the horizontal lines are 6 cm apart. The resulting checks are 5 × 6 cm rectangles, not 10 × 12 cm rectangles.
Windowpane Size, Line Width and 300 PPI Explained
With windowpane, the important measurements are the distance between lines, the line thickness and the full seamless repeat. Keep all three in proportion. A 0.5 mm line may feel restrained on a 5 cm pane but much stronger on a 1 cm pane. The same artwork can look very different when applied to a small pocket or a large jacket panel.
| Repeat tile | Panes in tile | Single pane spacing | Approx. PNG dimensions at 300 PPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 × 6 cm | 2 across × 2 down | 3 × 3 cm | 709 × 709 px |
| 10 × 10 cm | 2 across × 2 down | 5 × 5 cm | 1,181 × 1,181 px |
| 10 × 12 cm | 2 across × 2 down | 5 × 6 cm | 1,181 × 1,417 px |
| 12 × 8 cm | 3 across × 2 down | 4 × 4 cm | 1,417 × 945 px |
To calculate raster pixels, use centimetres ÷ 2.54 × 300 and round to a whole pixel. PPI is the number of pixels assigned to one inch of physical output; a 300 PPI label alone cannot add detail to a low-resolution image. SVG stores the grid as scalable vector shapes, making it useful for clean line work.
Windowpane vs Graph Check, Tattersall, Plaid and Gingham
These names can overlap in casual retail descriptions, but each gives a textile designer a different starting point.
| Pattern | Visual construction | Key difference from windowpane |
|---|---|---|
| Windowpane | Widely spaced, thin crossing lines around open squares or rectangles. | The reference design: generous visible background between lines. |
| Graph check | Fine, regularly spaced crossing lines often resembling graph paper. | Usually a tighter grid with smaller squares. |
| Tattersall | Fine crossing lines, commonly using two alternating colours on a light ground. | Multiple alternating line colours are central to the traditional appearance. |
| Plaid or tartan | Crossing bands with variable widths and colour sequences. | Broad bands and layered stripe arrangements can dominate the background. |
| Gingham | Even light and coloured bands creating filled light, mixed and deeper areas. | Recognisable filled tonal checks rather than mostly open rectangles. |
| Buffalo check | Large contrasting filled blocks, often red and black. | Bold square areas instead of delicate outline lines. |
| Checkerboard | Alternating solid squares, commonly in two colours. | Blocks are filled rather than left open. |
A windowpane overcheck can also sit on top of an underlying small-scale fabric pattern. In that case, the large outline grid is one layer of the design, not the only pattern visible in the cloth.
Choosing Windowpane Colours for Fabric and Clothing
Navy with ivory or grey
An understated option for tailored jackets and a blue windowpane shirt. A fine warm line is often easier on the eye than stark white.
White with blue or black
A white windowpane shirt can look crisp with a restrained blue or charcoal grid. Small differences in spacing noticeably change the formality.
Charcoal, cream and tonal shades
Lower-contrast grids suit more reserved designs. For black and white windowpane, expect the lines to remain prominent even at a distance.
For a men’s windowpane shirt, consider how the check meets the button placket, breast pocket and cuffs. Men’s windowpane trousers and windowpane check trousers also benefit from consistent line alignment at side seams and along the leg. A bold pattern may require additional cutting allowance to match lines correctly.
Colours shown by a monitor are not physical dye or print specifications. Before production, check the chosen yarn or fabric swatches, compare them in the intended lighting and approve a sample at the correct repeat size.
Which Download Format Should You Use?
PNG repeat tile
Useful for raster design applications and print mockups. The dimensions represent one repeat tile, ready to be placed edge to edge.
SVG vector repeat
Best when clean outlines and scalable dimensions matter. It can be resized in vector-capable programs without introducing pixelated edges.
Full tiled PNG
A larger 2 × 2 repeat illustration for visual inspection and presentation. It shows how the pattern joins across neighbouring tiles.
For digital textile printing, the correct file depends on the printing provider’s requirements. Supply the repeat dimensions, expected physical scale and agreed colour references. A seamless surface design is not itself a weaving machine instruction or garment cutting pattern.
Where Windowpane Checks Work Best
Tailored clothing: Windowpane is a recognisable choice for suits, sport coats, waistcoats and blazers. Large rectangular panes can change the visual proportions of a jacket, while delicate checks may appear almost plain from across a room.
Shirts: A windowpane check shirt can use a lighter ground and smaller-scale lines. A blue windowpane shirt or a white windowpane shirt is easier to coordinate when the grid colour relates to other garments.
Trousers: A fine, balanced check can be used on dress trousers, though large high-contrast windows are much more noticeable. Inspect the vertical fall of the lines and check matching between panels.
Dresses and accessories: Open grids work on dresses, skirts, scarves and structured bags. Scaling matters: a grid that is well balanced on a coat may appear oversized on a small accessory.
Home textiles, quilting and packaging: A simple outlined check can also support cushions, curtains, table linen, quilt backing, wrapping paper and stationery. The open background provides room for texture, typography or other visual elements.
Windowpane Check Questions
What is the main difference between windowpane and plaid?
Windowpane relies on fine lines spaced widely enough to leave large open areas. Plaid is a broader category that can use heavy bands, many colours and irregular stripe sequences. Some retailers call windowpane a kind of plaid, but the visual structures differ.
Is a windowpane check always square?
No. The outlines may be square or rectangular. In tailored clothing, taller rectangular windows are also common; repeat width and height do not have to be equal.
Is windowpane always plain-woven?
No. The term identifies the visual check, not a mandatory weave. Woven examples can have different base weave structures, and windowpane can also be printed or knitted.
What is a double-line windowpane?
It uses two closely spaced parallel lines in each direction rather than a single outline. The paired lines should remain much narrower than the spaces they enclose.
What is a shadow-line windowpane?
A second fine line appears beside the main grid line, usually in a quieter contrasting tone. It gives the check a subtly layered appearance without filling in the panes.
How is windowpane different from Tattersall?
Both use thin crossing lines. Traditional Tattersall commonly uses alternating line colours on a light ground, whereas a simple windowpane often uses one main line colour and larger open spaces.
How do I calculate pane spacing?
Divide repeat width by the number of panes across, and repeat height by the number of panes down. A 12 cm repeat with three panes across gives 4 cm between vertical lines.
Does 300 PPI mean the repeat is ready for printing?
Not automatically. The export must also have the correct physical dimensions, sufficient pixel detail and colour handling for the intended production method. Confirm those requirements with your printer.
Which file is best for editing line colours later?
SVG is generally more suitable for editing geometric line artwork in a vector editor. PNG is useful for pixel-based applications, but it is less convenient for independently changing individual shapes.
