Black and White Pattern Generator
Design monochrome checks, diamonds, grids and textile-inspired motifs with a real seamless repeat. Pick a construction, adjust its scale and colours, then export SVG or print-resolution PNG artwork.
Pattern settings
Matching repeat width and height maintains square motif proportions. Both dimensions affect the physical size of the downloaded tile.

Which styles are included?
Filled checks: checkerboard, pin check, gingham and large buffalo-inspired checks.
Line checks: windowpane, Tattersall-style, graph, lattice and generic plaid.
Diamonds: argyle with overcheck lines, and alternating harlequin diamonds.
Textile-inspired: houndstooth and shepherd checks use a calculated 2/2 twill colour-and-weave surface. Herringbone and basketweave are drawn surface motifs, not executable loom drafts.
Not every name in a pattern directory is a separate construction. Named clan tartans, proprietary checks, fabric finishes and manufacturing techniques are deliberately not offered as inaccurate substitutes.
Your generated pattern
PNG and SVG contain one repeating tile. Full Image saves the tiled design at the selected pixel dimensions. Editing any setting hides the old output until Generate is clicked again.
What are black and white check patterns?
Black and white checks use contrast to define squares, bands, points or intersecting lines. A checkerboard alternates filled squares; gingham forms crossing stripe bands with a mixed-looking intersection; windowpane uses fine lines around open spaces. These patterns are not interchangeable even when they share a monochrome palette.
Construction and style selection
Traditional houndstooth is a colour-and-weave effect based on 2/2 twill with alternating groups of four dark and four light yarns in both directions. Argyle uses diamonds and diagonal overchecks, while herringbone is a reversed diagonal arrangement. Here the preview reproduces visible artwork, not a production weave draft.
How to create a repeat
Select one of the styles, choose a black-and-white or grayscale preset, or enter two HEX colours. Set the motif scale and tile width and height in centimetres, then click Generate. Inspect the multiple-tile preview and the single repeat before saving. Refresh restores the defaults and hides the output.
Sizes, downloads and applications
At 300 PPI, an 8 cm tile is approximately 945 pixels wide (8 ÷ 2.54 × 300). PNG is useful for raster printing and mockups; SVG preserves geometric vectors; Full Image prepares a repeated pixel canvas. Designs can inform suiting, fabric prints, quilting, wall graphics, packaging and monochrome interiors. Confirm materials and colour tolerances before production.
